In our parents generation, it became a privilege to have a telephone in every home. In our generation, it seems we have one in every hand. We have grown accustomed to 24 hour a day access and connection wherever we roam. I can call from the streets of Sudan and converse with my husband as he walks in a park in the Northwest.
But what happens when we lose our signal? ‘Can you hear me now’?
Though we have managed to grapple with this question electronically, I want to address how we remain disconnected spiritually.
Prior to the fall, we had full coverage….daily access to the Living Lord and hearts that could commune with Him. We were spiritual beings with a physical form placed in a habitation conducive to the relationship we had with our Father. Contrary to our spiritual capacity and design, when sin tore us from the presence of our Holy God, we were left to navigate with our body and soul. Instead of being ‘led’, we wandered. We adapted to our spiritual void by navigating with our soul instead. Our soul (our mind, will and emotions)was designed to help interpret the tangible, natural realm…but not to be the instrument for setting direction in our lives.
Upon our new birth in Christ, we are once more made alive in Spirit. The presence of the Third Person of the Godhead has come to indwell and lead. As an individual, I must relearn the language of His Spirit, with eyes that see and ears that hear what He is saying. As a member of the Body of Christ, my growth and maturity in this contributes to the well-being of the church as a whole.
